Proposal to Re-use part of the Churchyard
of St James the Great, Thorley

The Parochial Church Council of the Ecclesiastical Parish of Thorley is proposing to re-use part of the old churchyard in which burials ceased in about 1888. The Parochial Church Council has received advice that it would be viable to use the spaces between the existing graves in this area, and that these arrangements would not disturb existing burials. As there are no extant records relating to the previous burials in this area, it is not possible to trace relatives to inform them of our intention. There is no plan to remove the one monument (an illegible headstone) within the proposed area of re-use. Information will be displayed at a public meeting to be held on Thursday, 2nd July starting at 7:30 p.m. at the St Barnabas Centre. If any member of the public wishes to object to these proposals they are invited to lodge particulars of their objection together with details of the reasons at the Church Office, The St Barnabas Centre, Church Lane, Thorley, Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire CM23 4BE by the sixteenth day of July 2009 and their objection will be given due consideration.
