SACRED
TO THE MEMORY
OF MARY SARAH, WIFE
OF THOMAS PENNINGTON, RECTOR OF THIS PARISH
NOT LESS ENDEARED TO HIM BY A CONNEXION
OF NEARLY FIFTY-NINE YEARS
THAN BY THE NEAREST TIES OF BLOOD.
SHE WAS A TRUE AND FAITHFUL WIFE AND
KIND MOTHER REMARKABLY MODEST AND CORRECT
IN HER CONDUCT SINCERE AND HONEST
AVERSE FROM FLATTERY, HYPOCRISY OR DECEIT
AND THOUGH DIFFIDENT AND RESERVED
WAS HIGHLY TALENTED AND ACCOMPLISHED
AND WELL VERSED IN MODERN LANGUAGES.
AFTER A LONG AND PAINFUL ILLNESS WHICH SHE BORE
WITH THE GREATEST PATIENCE AND FORTITUDE,
SHE RESIGNED HER SOUL TO GOD AT AMIENS IN FRANCE
DECEMBER 20TH 1847, AGED 87
WITHOUT A STRUGGLE AS SHE HAD ALWAYS WISHED
IN THE HUMBLE HOPE OF A JOYFUL RESURRECTION
AND WAS INTERRED
IN THE CEMETERY OF PERE DE LA CHAISE AT PARIS
ACCORDING TO HER DESIRE WHERE A MONUMENT
IS ERECTED TO HER.
THIS TABLET IS PLACED TO HER MEMORY
BY A HUSBAND WHO TRULY LOVED HER
NON OMNIS MORIAR
