went to France in December 1914.
He went to Salonica in November 1915.
He was transferred from the Rifle Brigade to the Machine Gun Corps in
May 1916.
He returned home in December 1918.
He received the 1915 Star.

Was in the Army at the outbreak of the War.
Went to France on August 14th 1914, where he remained till 1916. He
then went to Scotland to help train recruits.
Went out to France again in 1918.
He was awarded the Military Medal with bar.
He also received the Mons Star.

Was called up January 1917 and entered 3rd Batt. Essex Regiment.
He went to France in 1917. He was afterwards transferred to the 6th
Batt. Northampton Regiment.
He was taken prisoner during the Great German Offensive on April 5th
1918, and died of pneumonia in the Prisoners of War Camp at Stendal
in Germany on June 25th 1918, aged 27 years.

the Army he was employed as an agricultural labourer by Mr. John Lawrence.

Bishop's Stortford Troop. C. Squadron Essex Yeomanry.
He became a member of the Essex Yeomanry at the age of 16.
Immediately on the outbreak of the War he joined his Regiment and went
out to France in November 1914.
He was killed in action at Ypres on May 13th 1915.
Captain R. G. Proby, who was in command of the Bishop's Stortford Troop
wrote as follows:
"His death will be very deeply felt by the whole Squadron &
especially by his friends in the Stortford troop, with whom he was very
popular."
He was 20 years old.

Enlisted on September 4th 1914.
Went out to France in July 1915.
Was wounded on May 3rd 1917 and was awarded the Military Medal for the
valuable work, which he did on that day.
His wound, which was in the arm, was severe, so that he was unable to
return to France, but he continued in the Army doing farm work until
the end of the War in the Labour Company.
He received the 1915 Star.

2nd Batt. Kings Own Royal Lancaster.
He was in India at the time of the outbreak of the War, and returned
to England in 1914.
He went to France in 1915. He was twice wounded. On Feb.18th 1915 he
was wounded in the shoulder, and on May 8th 1915 he was wounded in the
thigh and taken prisoner.
He remained a prisoner in Germany until the close of the War.

Joined the Army on 16th June 1916.
Went to France in July 1916, where he remained until he was demobilized
in March 1919.

the Army he was working with his brother William Chappell.

B Battery 295th Brigade Royal Field Artillery.
When War broke out he was in India, having joined the Royal Horse Artillery
in 1902 at the age of 16, and held the rank of Sergeant.
He returned to England in January 1915 and received a commission in
the Royal Horse Artillery and went to Gallipoli
on April 25th 1915. Here he won the Military Cross for fixing wires
& getting a message to Headquarters some time before the next message
got through.
He was one of the first to land and almost the last to leave at the
evacuation of the Peninsular.
Subsequently he went to France, where he was made Lieutenant; and later
he was promoted to be Captain in the Royal Field Artillery. Only a few
weeks before his death he was promoted to the rank of Major.
He was killed in action at Bienvillers-au-Bois on April 25th 1918.

He was in the Hertfordshire Regiment (T. F.) before the outbreak of
the War & was mobilized at once.
On the formation of the 2nd Batt. he was transferred into it from the
1st Batt.
He was discharged on April 4th 1916, having served his time.

he was employed as Stockman by Mr. F. Newman of Moor Hall.

Died of Consumption at Kennington, nr Ashford, Kent on May 28th 1918
aged 27 years.

the Army he was in the Metropolitan Police.

B. Squadron, Hertfordshire Yeomanry.
Joined the Army in June 1915.
Went to Egypt in October 1915 & then to France. Early in 1917 he
went to Egypt and thence to Palestine & Syria.
Returned home on February 4th 1919 and died of pneumonia following influenza
on February 11th 1919 aged 24 years.
Died at his home in Thorley & was buried with military honours in
Thorley Churchyard.

Was called up on August 21st 1916. Went to France on December 10th 1916.
Then in December 1917 on account of the Austrian offensive he went to
Italy & in the following Spring he returned to France on account
of the great German attack.
Before the War
he was employed as Groom-Gardener by Mr. T. R. Lawrence of the Mount,
Roydon, Essex.

Joined the Army on August 22nd 1915.
Served at home, and for a year and a half previous to his discharge
he was transferred to a Labour Battalion and did agricultural work.

Enlisted August 14th 1916 and went almost immediately to France, where
he remained until the end of the War.
He was wounded in the hand on September 3rd 1917.

by trade, and before entering the Army was employed by Messrs. W. Lawrence
& Son Building Contractors, Sheering.

H Special Company (Gas). Royal Engineers.
At the outbreak of the War he was in the 87th Royal Irish Fusiliers,
and went out to France on August 18th 1914.
He was wounded on November 28th 1914, being shot through the lungs.
He was transferred to the Royal Engineers in June 1915.
He gained the Military Medal, and was awarded a bar for conspicuous
bravery on April 4th 1918 during the retreat from St Quentin.
He was wounded in the back on May 28th 1918, and died at Etretat, France
on June 7th 1918.
He also gained the Mons Star.

He was at Eton at the outbreak of the War. He immediately applied for
a Commission, and was given one in the 4th Batt. (old Hertfordshire
Militia) Bedfordshire Regiment.
After training at Dovercourt he went out to France in May 1915. Was
invalided home on account of dysentery in September 1915. Went out again
to France in (Blank) 1916 & was killed
in action near Beaumont Hamel, on November 13th 1916 aged 20 years.
The following account is given of his death:- "He had gone over
in command of his company, had been severely wounded in the thigh, bound
up & left in comparative safety in a shell hole. His men were making
good, but suffering cruelly Bartle could not bear it: he must cheer
them on, must lead them morally, be with them even on his hands &
knees. Up & out he struggles, is immediately shot through the head,
& is said to have died with a smile on his face."

1st Hertfordshire Regiment.
Was in the Hertfordshire Regiment at the outbreak of the War, and was
engaged in training recruits until he went out to France in September
1917.
Later on he was placed in charge of the 82nd Company Chinese Labour.
After the signing of the Armistice he went out early in 1919 with 1400
Chinese to Singtao. He reached home on May 13th 1919.

of the War he was in the employment of the Bishop's Stortford Gas Company.

Was in the Hertfordshire Regiment at the outbreak of the War and went
out to France on November 5th 1914 at the age of 14.
After being in
France for a short time he returned to England to undergo an operation
for varicose veins in his legs.
On October 21st 1916 he was transferred from the Hertfordshire Regiment
to 13th Company R. A. M. C. (Dental Section) and was stationed at Edinburgh.
He was demobilized on April 27th 1919.
He received the Mons Star.

of the War he was in the employment of Messrs. Marden & Morris.

Went to France.
Was wounded in the leg & taken prisoner on March 26th 1918.
He returned to England in August 1918, & soon after he was obliged
to have his leg amputated. He died in Edmonton
Military Hospital on July 16th 1919 & was buried at Thorley
on July 22nd 1919 aged 20 years.

When War broke out he was with his Regiment at Omagh Co Tyrone, Ireland.
Went out to France with a draught on August 30 1914, & was wounded
on October 13th 1914 at Meterien, being shot through the lung.
Came home to England, where he remained till May 1915, when he again
went to France.
In December 1915 he left France for Salonica, where he remained till
the end of the War.
He was gazetted Captain in October 1914, & later on he was promoted
to the rank of Major.
He gained the Military Cross.
He also received the Mons Star.
Arrived in England in January 1919 & in April 1919 he went to the
Staff College, Camberley.

Regiment.
Then he was transferred to the 17th Batt. Royal Fusiliers & went

He was wounded in the knee on March 24th 1918, & was invalided
home.
He went out to France again in September, 1918 in the 10th Batt. Royal
Fusiliers & was wounded in the arm on October 5th 1918.
He was discharged in March 1919.

Went to France on November 14th 1914, where he acted as Ambulance Driver
attached to the Red Cross.
He remained in France till July 1st 1918, when he went to a Cadet School
at Brighton & afterwards at Exeter.
He received the Mons Star.
He was also awarded the D. C. M. for especial gallantry.

was employed by Mr. Erskine Evans of 3 South Street, Bishop's Stortford.

he leaves a place in the Squadron, which it will be difficult to fill.
Every one agrees that he was one of the very best N. C. O s in the Regiment,
and his troop would do anything for him."

A letter from one of his comrades, Company Master Master Sergeant O.
H. Perkins says "Private Prior was killed at Ypres by a German
ricochet bullet in the trenches on Nov. 19th last, death being instantaneous.
Poor Chap, he was an excellent soldier, one of the best. He was one
of the gallant men, who was in the bayonet charge at Ypres & could
account for many of the enemy."
